The Sechura Desert borders the Pacific Ocean on the west of Peru and is the most expansive desert in South America. It extends between 20 and 100 kilometers inland, to the east, until it reaches the Andean second ridges.

A notable animal native to the desert is the Sechuran fox. One of the smallest canids on the continent, the Sechuran fox was identified first in the Sechura desert, hence its name. Some facts about Sechuran foxes are that they are nocturnal and solitary, though they have been observed traveling in small family groups or pairs. They spend the daylight hours in dens that have been dug into the ground.
